The rifle is one of the rifles rebuilt by Springfield for the Franco-Prussian War. The stock has a sharp HSH cartouche and a script N firing proof. The cutter marks from the rifling machine are very clear, and the bore is very shiny with a few specks about half way down the bore. The mechanics are excellent and the rifle appears very sound.
This is 50-70 caliber centerfire U.S. Trapdoor Springfield rifle. The serial number is 42203 and is numbered on the barrel and receiver. The lock is dated 1863 and breach block is dated 1870, with U.S. and the eagle proof mark. The barrel and iron mounting were finished in the white. The lock, breechblock and receiver have 40-45% case colors.

Examine the lock plate and make sure that it has no bevel on the edge. Also, the lock plate of the weapon should be marked with the following text in this order when read from top to bottom, "U.S. Springfield 1873." If the lock plate is marked with this text, then this is a lock plate for an 1873 Springfield Trapdoor rifle or carbine. The Allen Conversions used as many of the Model 1863 parts as possible (*that is why the sideplate still has the "1863" date). The "P" on the underside of the wrist is a proof mark from when the rifle was built.
